Winning The Games Within The Game--Baseline Out of Bounds

We try to cover some special situations every practice in a 5 minute period.
A game situation to cover is Baseline out of Bounds and Sideline out of Bounds.
In the breakdown the defense has to get a deflection on the inbounds pass or they do push-ups, etc.

Three Things To Know About Practice

Tom Mullins wrote the "Leadership Game", which contains principles from eight college national champion football coaches. "All the national champion coaches said that the key to going from good to great came in two areas: The preparation of the team and the practice of the players. They were forever upgrading their preparation and sharpening their practices."

Three Things To Know About Practice:

1. Practice enables development
a. Done correctly, practice keeps making you better than you were yesterday.
b. If you don't practice, you shortchange your potential.

2. Practices Lead To Discovery:
a. If you commit yourself to practice, here are a few things you are likely to learn:
i. Practice both shows and build commitment.
ii. Your performance can always be improved.
iii. The sharpening process is better in the right environment
1. You can't discover your abilities and improve your skills in an environment where you are not allowed to make mistakes.
2. Improvement always requires some degree of failure.
iv. You must be willing to start with small things.
v. Very small differences, consistently practice, will produce results.
vi. There is a price to pay to reach the next level

3. Practice Demands Discipline
a. Developing discipline always begins with a struggle.
b. There is no easy way to be a disciplined person.
c. It is a matter of conditions, but of choice
d. Once the choice is made and practice becomes a habit, two things become obvious:
i. A separation between the person who practices and the one who doesn't
ii. The second thing that emerges is a winning spirit.
e. The harder you work, the harder it becomes to surrender.

Importance of Practice and Game Carryover

De La Salle Football—on practice preparation

“It’s a game of technique, repetition and getting it right in practice before you run it in a game. Discipline. The game is played aggressively, it’s hard and it’s tough.”

“You’re going to play just how you practice. You’re not some comic book hero who’s going to put on a cape on game day and go out there and star. It doesn’t work that way. You watch way too much TV if you believe that."

Finding Ways To Win--Competing In Practice

Finding Ways To Win--Compete

Coach Meyer always stressed to us not to think about winning, but think about ways to win. One of the biggest challenges we face is to get our players to compete in everything that we do. We use a variety of ways to compete in practice. One of the best is simply going against our male practice players. However, there are class conflicts at times and we do not have them at practice. Also, at the high school level it's not realistic to have male practice players (though going against your boys JV is often a good test).

Therefore, we have to compete against time and score. We compete in our breakdown drills. For example, in our 3/3, 4/4 defensive and offensive breakdown drills we play to a certain score or play for a time and keep score.

We always put what we emphasize to the disadvantage. In our defensive emphasis period, the defense gets one point for a stop and the offense gets 2,3 or And 1's they get whatever basket they score and we have been playing to 10. Losers run suicides for the difference in score.

When we go to our offensive breakdowns--we flip it around--offense gets one point for a score and defense gets two points for a stop and again losers run for the difference.

This creates the best competition (game speed) in our breakdown drills, as opposed simply going through the breakdown drills with no consequences.
